Rio Acari Marmoset (Callithrix acariensis)


MORPHOLOGY:
The Rio Acari marmoset has nails on the digits that are more claw-like. This species also has nonopposable thumbs. This species has a pelage color that dorsally is white, distally grading into gray to dark gray mixed with orange (van Roosmalen et al., 2000). Ventrally this species is colored white on the neck and chest and bright orange on the belly (van Roosmalen et al., 2000). The dorsal side of the arms and hands are gray mixed with the orange, and the ventral side of the lower arms is white with orange (van Roosmalen et al., 2000). The ventral side of the legs are white grading distally into orange with the inner surface being bright orange (van Roosmalen et al., 2000). The tail of this species is black with an orange proximal end (van Roosmalen et al., 2000). The face is naked and colored pink or flesh-colored with black patches between the eyes, on the side of the nostrils, and on the lower lip and chin (van Roosmalen et al., 2000). The nose and circumbuccal area are naked and pink to flesh-colored, and the nose has a narrow, triangular patch on it (van Roosmalen et al., 2000). The iris of this species is orange brown (van Roosmalen et al., 2000). The genitals are non-pigmented and exposed (van Roosmalen et al., 2000).

RANGE:
This species is found in the country of Brazil. This species occurs from the right bank of the lower Rio Acari to somewhere between the Rios Aripuana and Juruena and in the entire interfluvium of the Rios Acari and Sucunduri (van Roosmalen et al., 2000). This species lives in primary terra firme forest and in secondary forests surrounding plantations and manioc fields (van Roosmalen et al., 2000).

The Rio Acari marmoset moves quadrupedally through the forest and is capable of short leaps (Fleagle, 1988)

This species gives birth to twin offspring.
