MORPHOLOGY: The silvery marmoset has light colored patches on the hips. As with all callitrichids this species has nonopposable thumbs; also this species has claws instead of nails. The mean body weight for adult males is 355.6 (gn) (Ferrari and Lopes, 1992). RANGE: This species is found in Eastern Bolivia, Western Brazil, and North Eastern Brazil. The silvery marmoset lives in primary and secondary forests. ECOLOGY: The silvery marmoset primarily eats insects, but also eats gum, fruits, and flowers. Rylands and de Faria (1993) note that the silvery marmoset only seasonally exploits gums and is reflected in its lower incisors being short as compared to a species that primarily eats gums such as Callithrix jacchus. |
